Win98: programs don't start when clicked...

This has got me a little worried...

I want to run dxdiag to check on my DirectX 8 stuff... and when I clicked on "dxdiag.exe" in windows\system... it didn't load.

As soon as I clicked on it, I got the little "mouse arrow changes into the sand clock (loading)" graphic... and the computer seemed to be loading the program... but then nothing happened. At all.

In fact, right now, when I ctrl-alt-del, "dxdiag" is in my "Close Program" dialog box, yet it is clearly not running.

Help?

Nope, restart didn't do the trick...

P.S. When I "close program" on dxdiag after I ctrl-alt-del... my system freezes up...

UPDATE: Oh jeez... after about 2 minutes of waiting, dxdiag finally popped up... but why did it take so long? My resources are high... I have nothing running...
