Win98 Nothing works by domain (IP works)

My friend has a computer with Windows 98. The computer was able to connect to the internet without any problems at first. Then we uninstalled some programs that i knew were spyware. We uninstalled, webhancer, iMesh, and a few other things. We also ran Ad Aware and got rid of about 200 components of spyware.

However, now that thats all done, we cant browse or use any programs by domain name. We can browse by IP address just fine. I tried doing a tcp/ip rip and got the network control panel down to the basics. It will couldnt browse by domain. I tried forcing DNS numbers to the TCP/IP for the ethernet card, but that didnt help either.

Anyone have any ideas on what could fix this? Should i try to reinstall the spyware? Could one of the spyware programs have been redirecting the port DNS requests are made on and now the requests arent going anywhere? Help me out if you can... thanks!

There are a couple of spyware and 'alternate dns systems' that install Winsock name space drivers. When they uninstall, they do not properly cleanup the namespace, and the result is that Winsock chokes when it can't load the dll (why oh why it doesn't just ignore the missing dll and move on, I will never understand). Of the programs I've seen do this, the worst is 'new.net' which had thrashed the winsock installation of every machine I've seen it on.

New.net is bundled with BearShare, Webshots, Kazaa and used to be bundled with Go!Zilla, iMesh, Babylon, Cydoor, an GDivx. Here are some instructions for removing it (and you can extrapolate removing other entries from it). The Instructions.

Worst case you can nuke the entire namespace_catalog5 from winsock2 and it should rebuild it, but you may lose other changes since install you want. I'd treat that as a last defense before a full install (a reinstall on top won't fix this case)

Best,
Bill

thanks for the info. new.net is installed on there computer, but i never uninstalled it. Maybe running ad aware without uninstalling it screwed things up? Well, Im going to try that link you gave me. I also found something I will try as a last resort at http://www.cexx.org/winsock.txt. That tell you how to hopefully completely replace the winsock stuff. That same site also mentions how uninstalling webhancer can screw things up... I'm going to try that too.
