My friend's machine P120, 48 Megs RAM and Win98 which he uses just to surf now locks up after 10 min. He cant afford a new one. Do you think reinstalling Win98 over itself will help?

No, but it won't hurt. Try the latest IE 6.0, that might help.

The problem is most likely a hardware problem, which means you posted in the right forum after all. The computer is probably overheating. Blow out the dust in the chip's heatsink, and everywhere else including the ps.

P 120, 48 MB RAM It seems that the hardware is obsolete. Make sure that he doesnt open too many IE windows. My IE 6 uses 28MB RAM right now.

You friend should consider upgrading his PC. Any 500MHz or above is good enough.

I don't want to seem mean, but... LOL!!! :) I have the same problem with my Commodore 64 when I try to download MP3's. Maybe it's the 300 baud modem? :p (It's a joke. Try to laugh...)

personally, what i would do, is run the chip at 2x66FSB instead of 3x40FSB

you get a little overclock, but like 60% more memory bandwidth.

then I'd format, and install Win95 with IE4 (and the active desktop that comes with it).

that should be slightly more memory friendly than win98.

I wouldn't suggest reinstalling Windows after you overclock.

As far as the rubber crutches goes I am completely lost.

I dont think the extra 13mhz will make a difference.. the whole idea is for more memory bandwidth.

i had a P133 rock solid @200 once.

Overclocked or not, win95 with IE4 would be alot better than win98 on that box.
