win98 lockup and/or reboot after almost finishing loading

I have a 1ghz athlon machine in a pcchips m807 motherboard with 60gb maxtor HD, matsushita dvd and 256 mb pc133 ram, s3 8MB AGP video card, generic 300 watt power supply.

When I bought it and turned it on for the first time, it almost completely booted win98 and showed the default green screen with the hourglass, but right before playing the win98 theme music and showing the desktop folders, it decided to reboot. after rebooting 2 or 3 times it will finally completely boot win98 and be stable. sometimes i will get the blue screen of death, sometimes it will just be stuck with the default green screen with hourglass, and sometimes it will spontaneously reboot.

since I bought the computer I have replaced the video card with my old voodoo3 card, put in a scsi card with cd burner, a soundblaster live!value card, and a network card. The same problem still persists, and I can't figure out what is the cause. I also reverted from win98se (which came with the machine) to my old trusty and tested copy of win98 (first edition). my system is running within normal operating temperatures, so i doubt its an overheating problem. system is definitely virus-free also.

so far, I think i have narrowed the problem to one of the following, as these have not changed at all since I have had the problem:
1. motherboard
2. memory
3. hard drive
4. power supply
5. dvd-ram
6. bios settings

what is causing the problem? I know there are a lot of smart people out there, maybe one of you knows what is causing the problem. i will be eternally grateful for a solution.

thanks!

Is your processor overclocked? If so, try clocking back down to the default speed. If not, then it sounds like a bad motherboard or memory.

as far as I know, the system is not overclocked. However, i did buy it off the net for pretty cheap and i wouldn't be shocked if it was overclocked. I checked the motherboard manual and apparently there aren't the usual jumpers for bus speed/clock multiplier/voltage on the board that I would expect for someone to use to overclock my system. I don't see similar settings in my bios for manipulating bus/multiplier settings either. In this setting, how do i tell if my processor was overclocked?

I will try checking the bootlog in DOS next time it locks up. not a bad idea. of course, when it does boot correctly, there is no bootlog error message.

thanks

Did you format the HD before you installed 98 (first edition). Always format when downgrading the OS...
I would try it before replacing hardware.

actually yes, a hard disk reformat was part of the workup. i, too, like to reformat before reinstalling windows.
thanks
