win98 hardlocks(maybe motherboard)need suggestions. please

i have run across many amptron 3748 boards. and they ALL seem to crash windows. i get no blue screen just the system locksup. has anyone come across this problem in windows98. my diagnostic software (MicroScope) say the boards are fine. all the drivers are up to date. i am afraid to update the bios on a motherboard like this because its an amptron. has anyone come across a problem like this. if so? how did you fix it?
