Windows 98 is a POS OS. Of course it is going to have problems installing on a Toshiba laptop. Please don't tell me this is a relatively fast laptop. I hope it is an old slow one, because Windows 98 doens't belong on fast hardware.

The OP didn't ask for you goddamn opinion.

I am telling the truth. A POS OS certainly would freeze up wouldn't it. If it was a good OS, it wouldn't have any problems.

Go to start, run, msconfig and disable start up programs and add them back in till you find the culprit. Did you add any programs recently?

Boot to safe mode and then disable some of the peripherals first like modem, sound card and others. The reason it freezes during hardware setup is because there is either IRQ or Mem Address conflict. As soon as it finalizes and finally boot up, then start adding the peripherals one at a time while making sure you test each step of the way. If it freezes again, check mem address and IRQ assignment to the last device you added.
