Help,
I have a system running Windows 98 on it. Ran Norton Disk Doctor and Norton Speed Disk on it. Now I am getting a Blue Screen with 'Error Writing to Drive C:' everytime I try and do something in the operating system. It is acting like it is write protected or something.

Any idea how to fix this?

Thanks,
viperbri

Thats why I stay away from system programs that say they will "make your computer faster" "fix your computer" blah blah blah. I swear I got more business from Norton System Works 2000 with its crashguard program than anything else.

Your first mistake was using those programs before using Nortons own program called ghost. Get it.. learn it.. you wont regret it!

Power on your PC.. tap F8.. choose Command prompt when the startup menu shows.
When your at the c:\ prompt.. type in scanreg /restore (hope you didnt disable scanregistry in msconfig)

But thats assuming you cant get into safe mode and uninstall those programs first.

Also go to those programs website and search for that issue.. might be a known issue with a simple fix.

I've been using the Systemworks packages for quite a while (since 1998) and I have to disagree. While some parts of the package are rather useless, Norton has always been a fantasitc maintenance suite. I agree that Crashguard isn't particularly handy most of the time, but there are times where it is helpful (though I have it disabled from startup options out of personal preference :) ). The suite is not a 100% cure-all, but for standard maintenance I've found it to be very good.

I do admit that when I tried installing the Internet Security portion of the suite, my Win98 system didn't like it (ie: went crashy). Uninstalling the programs fixed it though.

Well, I DID NOT install the Crashguard because I know how much trouble it causes. The only utilities I installed from Systemworks were Norton Disk Doctor and Norton Speedisk. Speedisk is one of few defrag utilities that I can find are quick and reliable....thats why I used that.

I do use Norton Ghost a lot. Glad they finally built in the CD burning...makes restore disk creation a breeze.

Anyways, back to my original problem.

I can boot into safe mode and not have any problems. Disabled all unnecessary items in startup using MSCONFIG. Booted back into Windows 98 standard mode and still have the problem.

When the computer is idle in Win 98 I can hear the drive spinning away (only Systray and Explorer running). When I try and open a program I get the blue screen error "Error writing to disk in drive C:"
