Win98 doesnt work after being installed on formatted drive

I had this strange problem w/ XP (which I was running before) where it would simply restart w/o warning after the scandisk screen whether you let it run or not. I got as far as the login screen once but it restarted after that. So I basically took a hard drive from a different computer and found it worked fine. Since I was getting sick of all the problems XP gave me, I figured Id just go back to 98. Well I let 98 format my drive and then installed the OS. When it was configuring plug and play software though, it gave me an error about not being able to find certain files and told me the disc was dirty. Well I took it out and looked at it and yes indeed, the disc was dirty. THe install wen through after I restarted but when I loaded windows, it would always tell me explorer performed an illegal operation before it displayed the desktop and then it would stop starting up.

So I borrowed 98 from a friend and tried his. This time I got an error in the "cofiguring your settings" part (its the very last thing 98 does before its done installing) basically stating that rundll32 had caused and illegal operation or that regsvr32 had caused an illegal operation. Well, it still went through and finished installing and I loaded up windows. When I got into windows though, I got the same problem w/ explorer causing an illegal operation.

So I went to dos and used partition magic to format my drive. Then I installed windows. This time I again got an error in the "configuring your settings" part but this time, the progress bar stopped. So I restarted and it tried to configure my settings again. Again, I got an error and the progress bar stopped. The next time, I went into safe mode and windows loaded. Taking this as a good sign, I immediately restarted windows and let it boot in normal mode. This time, it successfully configured my settings and windows loaded. However, I could not open any programs because the moment I did, it would tell me whatever program I just loaded had caused an illegal error and eventually it would tell me tapisrv caused an illegal error and that there had been an internal error and I should restart. At this point I gave up and went to sleep.

Does anyone know why 98 will not work on my machine? Its a xp 1600, shuttle ak31a rev3.1 (their first kt266a board), 256 crucial ddr, gf3 ti 200, sb live x-gamer, 30 gig maxtor diamondmax plus 60 (i can get the exact model # on this when I get home from work), lite-on 40x12x48x cd-rw, antec ppp253x ps (250W), and linksys lnetx100 NIC.

It sounds like memory issues to me. If XP didn't work and then Win98 didn't work it sounds like a hardware problem. I suggest you pull everything out of your computer except for the memory, CPU, video card, and hard drive. Install Win98 and see if it works. If it does then add one card in at a time.

If it doesn't work then borrow some memory from a friend and test it with that. If that doesn't fix it try a different video card. Then try a different CPU. Still no go? Could be the motherboard causing the problem.

Another possible cause could be your power supply but I doubt it.

OK so I went to a friends house and installed both win 98 and win xp (on 2 diff partitions). Both worked fine at his house (I took my hard drive and installed by hooking up to his computer). Now at home though, win98 gives me the same problem. It will actually load but if I try to run programs, it will give me an illegal operation error. XP also does not work. It takes me to the screen where it says xp did not start properly last time. If i use last known good config, it goes to a blank screen and then nothing happens. If I tell it to load normally, it locks up immeditely, still on this "your comp did not start last time" screen. If i tell it to load safe mode, it goes over a bunch of files (displays all their paths in the command prompt) and when it finishes it locks up there. I am now running only w/ hard drive, motherboard, cpu, mem, and video card. I have tried using the hard drive on both IDE ports as well as w/ different cables. Basically, at this point, I just want to isolate what to replace so that I can do it and get running again. The problem is, I dont have any friends that use ddr systems so I cant test the ram or the motherboard and I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle or the risks involved w/ setting up my processor in a friends computer or vice versa. Is there any way to isolate this problem? (I WOULD just do an RMA of everything but my RAM is from crucial and my mobo and cpu are from newegg so I cant).

What I would do is. Buy a smaller memory module, disconnect everything except the hard drive, keyboard, and video card. Try booting the PC and see if Windows remains stable. If it remains stable then the memory module is probably bad. If the memory is under warranty return it. If it isn't replace it when you can.
