Seen a few posts about this already, but everyone seems to say "Just buy a network card." That's not an option, looking for the cheapest route to connect two PCs for simple file transfers. Spending money for an NIC isn't an option (it isn't me, so don't ask).

So, is it possible to link two PCs together via a USB cable, and if so how?

yes...
you need a special USB cable and then most of the time to install a special program... i can't think of one of the top of my head... but i guess LapLink now comes w/ one... i know there are cheaper versions tho...
also why not just get a couple of USB NICs... then just get a crossover cable and do it that way...

USB to USB solution:
You don?t need special program it loads the drivers and behaves like any other Network Connection.

Two NIC, and CrossOver cable, can be found for $25.
It yields faster connection.

However, if you don't have PCI slot, or you can not open the computer then USB is the answer.
