Win98 cursor problem

Era

I moved a HDD with win98 and the apps on it 'as is',CD rom, floppy and the monitor from an PII box to a Duron900/VIA/Nvidia 2MX desktop.I started the new system with win98 CD in the drive and I got the Duron system up and running after few dozen 'adjustments'.
I didn't clean install even though I should have, becauce I didn't want to and I was interested to know if it can be done.
I'm really *no* expert with windows and there remained one thing I can't resolve(among lots of others). The cursor.

Normally the 'I' shaped text cursor(like when editing text)changes from black to white when on black backround (like on some web site). Now it doesn't.Not when typing. Not when playing games.Never.
It's propably something really basic and simple(flipping a bit somewhere),but I can't figure it out.
The controlpanel/mouse settings are normal.Tried with removing the mouse from the system, booting and letting the OS to reinstall it.Didn't help.
The vid card is Nvidia 2MX,gould that be it?

I'm puzzled.
