Win98 Computer Won't Network!

OK. I have two computers hooked up to a Netgear RT314 router for a simple home network with both computers having access to my Roadrunner Cable Internet. One is doing fine. The second (older) one is not. I know that the problem arose when I wiped the computer to try Win98SE on it (it had been running Win95B.) Under Win95 it communicated just fine and, if nothing else, I can put 95 back on it. I do want to try it with 98 though, so I'd appreciate whatever help I can get.

The computer is a 233mmx, 64meg ram, using a Network Everywhere Adapter. Client for MS Networks, TCP/IP, and File/Print Sharing are enabled.

It can't communicate with anything. It can see itself in Network Neighborhood, but not the other system. It can ping itself, but not the router or other machine. The router isn't registering it in its listing. It isn't showing up for the other system. The other system can't ping it. I can't access the internet either. Both lights are on for the Network Card, and the router's lights say that it is connected.

Here's what I have tried: The cable--tried it running from the router to the other machine. Works fine.

The router--tried connecting the computer directly to the cable modem and setting it up to not use any sort of network other than TCP/IP. No internet connection.

The adapter--pulled it and tried it in the new machine. Works fine. Tried the adapter in the other machine in the not-working one. Nothing.

I have no idea. I've looked through the system devices both in regular and safe mode searching for some sort of incompatibility. I've got no more ideas. Can anyone help?

Need more info. Whats is your subnet mask? what are your IP's for the machines / router

Are your IP's static or dynamic?

Shut at the dark.

Could be that the installations of Win98, rearranged your IRQ assignment creating some conflict.

If that is OK, uninstall the Network, and then reinstall NetBEUI protocol only. If it does not work it is Hardware, or Windows problem. If it works, keep installing one Network Component at the time.

BTW: The NetBEUI ?trick? means to isolate between Basic Problems, to more complicated Network Problems, since NetBEUI is so simple that it is hard to configure it wrong. If every thing works OK, you can uninstall NetBEUI at the end.
