Win98 Bailed on me!

I have a dual boot system with Windows 2000 and Win 98 that was working great until I resized the NTFS partition with Partition Magic. Now the Win98 won't boot. After I select Windows 98 on the boot manager screen I get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left. I called Technical Support at PowerQuest, the company that makes Partition Magic, but the tech was unable to offer even a suggestion of how to fix the problem. The boot.ini file on the C: drive looks OK, and the physical drive that Windows 98 is loaded on is OK, when viewed from Windows 2000, which still works fine.

The problem looks like a hardware conflict, but it shouldn't be one, because the everything worked great until I resized the Windows 2000 partition.

Has anyone seen anyting like this? Any suggestions?

certainly sounds like re-sizing that partition killed some part of your mbr or something.

only way to fix win98 is most likely to "overlay" i.e. re-install it over itself.

of course, you have to be careful, because overlaying win98 will KILL your win2k !!

so, to re-install win98 AFTER win2k is already installed, read this anandtech FAQ
