hello good folks of anadtech -

the senerio: i was trying to load win98se (for reasons that i can't even imagine) on a fairly new machine for my boss. first win98se doesn't want to boot from the scsi cdrom. i am confused at this point but decide to more on so i install an ide cdrom. win98se decides to grace me with its loading screen and gets throught the first phase of install which seems like an eternity. then it restarts...so far this is more or less normal, well as far as windows goes. after win98 restarts, it gets to the part where it wants to load more off of the cdrom but it can't find the disk. i go to browse and alas, there is no cdrom drive loaded. so it doesn't want to finish loading win98 because it can't find the rest of the files. thoughts?? anyone....anyone?? how can it load from the cdrom drive in the first phase of install and then suddenly the drive is not there?? so needlesstosay, after all this i am ready kick mr. gates squarely in the butt. but if anyone could offer some assistance, it would be greatly appreciated. thanks. 🙂

Boot up from a floppy with CDROM drivers. Copy the contents of the Win98 directory onto the hard drive and then run setup from there.

i thought about that, but wouldn't that still give me the problem of win98 not detecting the cdrom drive??
