Win95 not recognising CDROM

Hi,

I know win 95 is old-hat now, but Im trying to help a friend with a problem.

Every time they boot up their PC (A Gateway G5-200 <shudder>) the Standard IDE/ESCD Hard Disk Controller in Device Manager keeps being lost, and you get a little yellow "!" over it. If you click Properties > Update Driver and select standard driver it installs and the CD is then recognised and works properly...

However as soon as you reboot, it's lost it again and you have to repeat the procedure!!!

I have searched high and low on http://support.microsoft.com but to no avail.

I am SURE I have heard of a problem like this before, but cannot remember where / or how it got resolved.

Can anyone help??? PLEASE?? It's driving me nuts! 😕

Thanks.

Mike.

Boot your machine into safe mode and delete all devices from "device manager". Then boot up normally and let windows to set up everything form beginning. BTW, typical problem with Win9x crappy hardware management 🙂
