Win8 and Aero

Hi All,

I have a few questions relating to Aero and how it's changed in Win8.

What exactly is Aero? I know Win7 had something called Aero Glass (enabled by changing to an Aero them) and that is no more with Win8 9200 RTM, but does that mean that Aero is also completely removed? Or is Aero still enabled but just w/o Glass?

Was Aero/Glass removed only in the last Win8 build (9200)?

How do you check one way or another if Aero is on or off on Win8 now?

Aero is a more or less complete rewrite of the Windows shell to use DirectX instead of GDI+ that was introduced in Vista. Aero Glass is a number of visual effects that could be applied, and have been dropped from Windows 8.

Thanks. So, on Windows 7, changing the theme from Aero to Classic was simply turning off Glass but Aero was not disabled? Or was there actually such a thing as turning Aero off on Win7?

On Win8, is it ok to say that Aero is always on and cannot be turned off?

I will preface this by saying it's more of an educated guess than based on definite knowledge, so someone may well come along and say I'm full of it.

If you go to the Windows Classic "theme" in Windows Vista and 7, I do believe it reverts back to using the GDI+ based interface. Mostly this is based on how long it takes to switch between the two, and the fact that the basic versions of Windows 7 claim to not come with Aero.

And I have yet to use Windows 8 in any way, shape, or form, so I wouldn't feel comfortable even speculating.

I have to say I have used Win 8 for a while and I am falling into the "it will be a failure" camp. Say what you will about Metro etc.. it can be adjusted to and I have. But the overall "look and feel" of the rest of the desktop... sucks. Maybe I am just picky... I expect windows to flow together look wise with a desktop etc... Aero accomplished that wonderfully. Windows 8 just looks like floating boxes contrasting with a wallpaper on the desktop.

I won't even get into how shitty this thing works with multiple desktops and the corner shortcuts.
