Win7 "you need permission" and I've done EVERYTHING!!!....

Long story short (in case you know this too)......

Latitude E6400 SD card reader won't work. Supposedly it's a Win7 issues, or possibly a hardware issue (though rarer).

Based on the post by "smoneymaker" on this page, I'm trying his workaround by renaming the driver file......

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19177812?pi239031352=2

But no matter what I try, I CANNOT get permission to change the file. I've tried activating the "elevated Administrator", I've tried security tabs, owner tabs......just about everything you can YouTube or Google but I always get the "you need permission".

TIA

Are you renaming the file from the location you copied it to (desktop was a good choice IMO) or from the original directory?

If you are, and it still doesn't work, start Windows in safe mode and the process from there.

Yes, renaming on the desktop. (I figured it'd make for conflict within the folder)

So i tried safe mode too.....no joy. Same result in either user. As "me" (admin) or "Administrator" (i.e. elevated admin).

And I wish I didn't have to do it anyway as I'd like the freakn' SD card reader to just work but it appears lots of folks have had this issue and there are almost no answers out there. (freakin' amazing)

🙁

You shouldn't need permission to change a copy of a file on your desktop. Try copying the file within its own directory, tell it you want to keep both, then copy the copy to the desktop.

Have you tried downloading the driver and renaming the file before it gets into the driver folder?

There's no problem changing the name of the file on the desktop. That part goes fine. It's just when I go to paste it back into the driver directory. (C:\windows\system32\drivers). There's already a file named sdbus.sys in there, I'm just replacing it. (or in my case, not so much) 😉

Gotcha. That part wasn't clear and tbh I am surprised the person you linked was able to do it as well. It is probably active.

I have a couple ideas:
1. Boot off a Windows install disk and replace the driver file from command mode.
2. Go to device manager from Windows and disable the card reader. Once you reinstall, see if you can then replace it.

The registry entries that define default file permissions can become corrupt over time. There are numerous causes; Improper manual registry editing, so called "registry cleaners", and misbehaving third-party installers and uninstallers, just to name a few. It's been my experience that when the scenario you describe occurs, it's quickest and simplest to reset the default file permissions in the registry. MSDN's Aaron Stebner created a very useful batch file that does just that:

Solving setup errors by using the SubInACL tool to repair file and registry permissions.

.

I do agree at time permissions can get corrupt but you can lower the UAC under account settings which might help things out
