How to install and use an SSD (Windows 7 & general info). updated 05/30/2011
Step 1: Enable AHCI in BIOS. (alternately RAID)
Step 2: Install Windows 7.

Oh, is that all?! :|

INFO!
MOBO: http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3257#sp
SSD : M4 64GB 0309 firmware (by the way a new firmware update is out today for all us M4 owners)

Yes, I am in AHCI mode. There are no other drives connected to the system expect the flash or the DVD drive to install the OS.

Now so far I have troubleshot(?) through getting the SSD on the right mode in the BIOS, and I can format it, and dance with it and make out with it long time. I have also used DISKPART in the Windows 7 install and used the 'clean' command. While still in the Windows 7 install, Windows DOES SEE THE SSD. I can format it, and it does let me make a partition. I have also set the disk with the bootable flag using Acronis's tool. I have been at this for three hours using both a USB stick to try and install it and a DVD (the DVD install wouldn't even detect the SSD. Wtf?)

Here is the screenshot of what it says when I try and click to stay the install.. (This install was coming off a USB 8GB flash drive if it makes a difference. Also it is a 64bit install [or attempt thereof] of Win7 Ultimate SP1)

What steps do I need to take to get the install to gooooo? Input would be greatly appriciated, this is my first SSD. Im hoping its something obvious and I can just smack this problem down with the help of you fine chaps. Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I did try that but the install would not recognize the SSD at all from the DVD. I will however try again and bunt the exact data thats on the flash to fresh DVD (the are both SP1 of 7 64bit Ultimate so its weird). Going to give this forum a bit of time before I restart again :)

After 3 failed win 7 installs I set bios to ide for the install only.
Then I changed it to AHCI mode in the bios and reset reg. in windows.

sounds like the SSD is defective, or something is going on with the chipset and/or SATA ports.

I would try a different SATA port for grins, When I tried to install Win7 on my gigabyte board (2500 intel though) and same SSD the option for ACHI wasn't even available and Installed it as IDE but then after installing Win 7 the damn ACHI option was available in the bios???? Wasn't able to do what John did and reinstalled and everything was fine.

If you have a spare hd try to install on it for grins using same sata port. Likely bad SSD if that works. Good Luck, installs can suck balls at times!

I had a similar problem with my replacement agility 2. Couldn't put a partition on it. Fix was to create a new partition table using gparted.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

I burnt the very same ISO that was on my flash to a DVD, and the DVD install went fine without ant issues. No idea why it would have this sort of issue aside from maybe some confusion with the flash partition and the SSD etc. Who knows?

Thanks again!

I had this same problem with an Intel 320 on my laptop. . . Put the disk in and away it went.

The same thing happened to me with my new PC (M4 and Asus P8Z68 Deluxe), but from the actual Win7 Ultimate disc, and I instantly started worrying since it's the first SSD I've ever owned.

Don't remember exactly what I did, but basically I just started over, and everything worked perfectly on the second attempt... strange.
