My Network and modem got nuked last night in a storm. The modem is fried and I am using the WiFi hotspot on my phone to get internet access. I am trying to fill orders and Win 7 won't let me access my LAN and also the internet on the USB WiFi dongle. I have to disable the LAN to get internet because Win 7 is so stupid it is still trying to get internet off the LAN. It connects fine with the WiFi but I can't use it till I disable the LAN. I am using stamps.com which won't print labels unless connected to the net. If I am connected to the net my printer won't work because I disabled my LAN. Talk about a CF. I was able to save the print file as an XPS and print through the LAN after turning the LAN back on which nukes the WiFi. Yes I do need a beer.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe that you need to make sure that the LAN is on a different subnet than your cellular hotspot, and that you only have one default gateway (the hotspot). You should have routing-table entries for the LAN over the ethernet.

I remember this was straightforward in XP but it seems that most of this stuff is hidden by the wizards. Where do I access these settings?

Can anyone lead me through this process. I don't know what to change the wireless adapter's IP, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, or the Preferred DNS server and alternate DNS servers to?

I was able to change the subnet mask etc but still have the same problem. It won't let me use the wireless for internet and still allow me to connect to the LAN. I know there should be a way to do this but it is not obvious. I may have to enable internet sharing on another computer on the network and plug the USB wifi adapter into that.

manually configure the LAN port with a static IP address in your lans range but DO NOT add a default gateway.

Let the wifi remain a DHCP address. you will only have one default route now. (A route telling your computer where to send packets not destined for the local lan)

This will most likely brake lan functionality if the wifi hotspot and your lan share a network address (like both are 192.168.0.x /24). If that is the case you will need to reconfigure the hotspot or the local lan to have a different network address.

I had to enable connection sharing on the WiFi dongle. It seems to be working now. It is not letting me use the internet connection over the LAN on other computers but I can live without that for now.
