I have a Dell 11z with 2gigs ram running WinXP.
I only use it to surf the web, and light Word/Excel use.

Will this laptop run my programs under Win7 at least as fast under WinXP?

My opinion is that yes it is adequate but mind if I ask, why are you thinking about switching? Is there some thing you do not like about windows? :)

If that's all you are using it with, why bother? I just rebuilt my two laptops with faster processors and more memory, but I'm still using XP... I just don't see the need to upgrade a casual use PC/laptop to a bigger OS and all the trouble it may wind up being.

I'd say ubuntu is a better choice, even my Athlon p-360 (Dual @ 2.3) picked up the snail trails running 7. Ubuntu on the other hand does an amazing job for pretty much every day task.

AND! If i ever need anything else, just choose windows 7 at bootup

My work laptop with only 2G of memory ran Win7 just as well and sometimes better than XP.

I have a notebook with only 1.5GB of memory and possibly a little slower than your CPU and it runs Windows 7 just fine. I do have an SSD in this notebook, so that probably helps a lot. Even with a regular hard drive, it is probably more than enough.

For your proposed uses, GNU/Linux would give you a modern desktop at zero cost. Otherwise, 7 will work fine if that's what you want.

The only reason that I would change from XP to Win7 on that laptop would be to get better cold start times with some applications, such as Firefox / LibreOffice. I ran Win7 RC1 for a while on my old Athlon XP setup with 2GB RAM, it did well in this regard.

i resisted upgrading to Win7 for the longest of times because there was no need to. Was happy w/WinXP. but i also havent bought any new cpus/laptops in 4yrs.

going to buy a new system just to play Diablo III and will install Win7 on it.

I figure i'd start early and upgrade my laptop if it runs Win7 at least as well. Was concerned about just 2gigs Ram tho.

yeah, i know it will run Win7, but will it run as well as WinXP?

I have laptop circa 2003 and WinXP do run better than Win 7 on them.

I also have laptops from 2007 and above, on those there is No noticeable performance differences between XP and Win 7 as log as you have 2GB of RAM (or more).

the processor is definitely a bottleneck, or right on the "edge". I've seen 1.2GHz dualcore run very slow with 7. It can depend on the harddrive as well, if it's 5400 or even 4200 rpm, then i would not recommend Win 7.
