Win7 - vertical maximize, but no horizontal maximize

If you move the mouse pointer onto the top or bottom edge of the window, such that the mouse pointer is a double-ended arrow, and double-click, then it vertically maximizes the window.

Why doesn't this work horizontally?

Both of you are correct. Also, if you repeat the double click on the vertical max, it reverts to the window it started from, i.e., it's a toggle. As to why the horizontal double arrow does not work the same way is a mystery. Maybe no one thought of it as useful?

I just drag windows to the top to maximize or left/right screen border to maximize to the side. Dont forget about mouse gestures either, much easier than clicking something.
Move a window left/right fast and it shows desktop, do it again it puts all windows back.
