win7 - traffic prioritization?

basically, i store files on 2 PCs on a LAN.

the problem is, when i watch something on PC A that is stored on PC B - and at the same time move files back and forth, there is no priority given to the video i'm watching so it stutters and pauses for seconds at a time.

is there a way to make windows give priority to what i'm watching over just moving files?

Buy a Giga capable switch, and install Giga capable Network card in the computers.

😎

it is a gigabit LAN

doesn't help though.

there's got to be some software way of doing this right?

i mean, torrent, newsgroup clients let you throttle traffic, why can't i do something similar in win7?

Try using ftp instead of windows file copy to move your files. Filezilla client lets you specify a speed limit so you can queue up a large amount of files, and let it transfer in the background without worrying that it will saturate all available bandwidth. Teracopy might allow you to do this also. Good luck!

The main problem is that you're doing both over SMB/CIFS so there's no way to differentiate the traffic even if Windows had QoS capabilities.

NetLimiter might also work, but it may be difficult for this app to treat the file transfer differently than the video being played across the network. As Nothinman mentioned, it's difficult in this situation because both things are happening with the same protocol and are being treated equally by Windows.

Good luck!

i used that ages ago. dont remember why though

might be easier to just copy what i'm watchign to the local pc first. at least till MS catch up
