WIN7 taskbar not showing open programs

** UPDATE ** fixed.

I'm a WIN7 noob and just trying to set this whole thing up to look like it did on Vista. Meaning the quicklaunch toolbar is next to the start button - that part I figured out. But in doing that somehow my currently open programs aren't showing on my taskbar. It had things pinned before but I unpinned a bunch but that doesn't mean new open programs shouldn't show up...

You can see Chrome is open but is not showing on my taskbar (it's there in quicklaunch so ignore that). Main taskbar is to the right of it, nothing there no matter what programs I open. Why? I opened the taskbar properties to show my current settings. I can only alt-tab to scroll through my open programs.

EDIT>> when I try to pin Chrome or any other icon to taskbar, it accepts it but still doesn't show on the taskbar. I'm beginning to think this isn't the toolbar/taskbar... but how did that happen? I see no other option to show a taskbar.

Not sure how you managed to show the quick launch separate from the taskbar. Windows 7 shares quick launch with the taskbar. it is not separated like in xp and vista. Isn't the "fix" source of the problem?

^ if that's the case, I'm not sure why pinning other icons (from desktop) to "taskbar" doesn't show in the quicklaunch too.

I followed these instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975784 to enable quicklaunch, dragged it to the far left. At that point the taskbar was still showing open programs (separate from quicklaunch). Then I started unpinning what was in taskbar by default and I never saw another program show on the taskbar.

Another thing, after hitting pin to taskbar for any icon, I can only do unpin from taskbar for that icon, but again it never shows. I've expanded both toolbar widths and raised it many rows so I know it's not hiding.

arent the pinned items to the taskbar already quick launch icons?

I suppose they are but I didn't like the behavior with the stacked icons and no "my computer" (I hate explorer) or "show desktop" so I wondered if quick launch still existed.

Is there any way to make everything default again? System Restore was turned off.

** FACKEN EH ** a reboot fixed it. Quicklaunch and taskbar can still be 2 separate toolbars.

I swear at you M$.
