I think the point was to say that FO3 was in no way any more linear than NV and probably less so to be honest.

Well, fallout 3 only has one main quest, one way to win.

New Vegas has four completely separate endings and a bunch of side areas that have a small influence on the end game.
 
Figured I'd bump this and mention that I installed the game off of Steam a few days back. Did the suggested ini tweaks for dual threading, set the game exe to run as admin in XP compat mode, and I haven't had a single problem with it so far. Runs smooth as silk. Great game, too. A lot like FNV in atmosphere, but grittier and grayer.
