Sure looks pretty but needs polish.

My aging copy of OFFICE XP didn't play too nicely with it. Got quite a few errors with it. And then there were some quirks like OUTLOOK would not remember any of the incoming/outgoing server passwords.

What else? I was having slowdowns with Flash. For example, youtube vids would only load part way and stall. I had a second WinXP SP3 machine running at the same time and no issues with such youtube vids.

I don't like how 7 handles "My Documents" at all. In XP, you have one folder and then within it you have My Vids, My Pics, etc. To me, it seems like 7 has like a bunch of such folders that are NOT under one "umbrella" folder. So how does one easily move them all to another partition? That is personally one of the first things I do after install is move "My Documents" to a different, larger partition than the system folder.

MS needs to add a really easy "MOVE ALL YOUR DOCUMENT/DOWNLOAD/PICS/VIDS/LINKS/ETC" button allowing users to put it all on a different partition.

If it exists in RC1 64-bit, I didn't see it.

I am looking forward to 7 but I am willing to wait until November for them to (hopefully) get it better...and I suppose I will have to budget for OFFICE 2007/2010 as well (no doubt their plan).

RC1 simply wasn't where I wanted it to be for my "daily" OS, so it's back to XP for now.

Edit: To be fair, I didn't give it but a few hours, but I was having more and more little issues the more I installed on it. I don't have the time to really mess with it all in more detail at the moment.

Personally I did not like how XP handled the My Vids, My Pics, etc under My Documents. In Vista/7 those folders are under the root of %userprofile%. You can also add a shortcut to the taskbar for your downloads to change the default download location to wherever you please.

Are you sure you installed the latest version of flash? Youtube seems to work fine for me as does Vimeo.

So you can shift the entire user profile to D: from C:?

Yep, I went straight to Adobe for that. I also had the most up to date NIC driver.

Why not just redirect "my docs" etc to your D drive? No moving of anything necessary. Thats what I do anyway. Its as easy as changing the path of the shortcut.

I'm running 64bit RC1 right now. All Office 2003 programs work just fine EXCEPT for outlook. It stops responding immediately after launching

Other than that, pretty solid for me but then again that's a biggie.

i found it painless, especially since it loaded all the drivers, and windows live mail works good for my needs.

I much prefer the "Libraries" organization.. the folders that comprise them can reside anywhere you want.. they are essentially indexed databases for your content. Doesn't matter if your stuff is on one hard drive or 6 hard drives, they can aggregate all of the folders you choose into a single location and still provide quick access to the actual folder as well as an abstracted view of just content by name, type, etc. without showing folders. These are far better than canned searches or simple folders, imho.

If things are certain way in the RC don't expect it to be much different in retail. The RC is feature complete. Little things will be different, but libraries and the way documents folders work are here to stay. The RTM is due in just a few days.

I played with th ebeta for about a month last fall. One thing that was weird. Outlook 2007's RPC over HTTP functionality did not work.I assumed it was a firewall issue but the built in firewall looked fine.

Is the SSL certificate working OK for Outlook Anywhere?

Yeah, I really haven't had much trouble getting user folders where I want them in RC1; definitely no problems with Flash.

I've changed the way I use the OS a bit since switching to 7, and after that adjustment, I'm really liking it better than Vista or XP. A few hours probably really isn't enough time to give it a fair shake in that regard.

The main issue I have is with Libraries, and the fact that you cannot add network drives to them because they can't be indexed. Since I keep most of my media on a separate WHS box, this renders Libraries useless to me.

Seems to work fine with Windows Home Server. I have all my media on WHS, and I can add those locations (photos, music, etc) to the respective libraries.

Weird, last time I tried it wouldn't let me. I'll have to give it another try when I get home.

Reminds me of another issue I had.

I run a Ubuntu-based/SAMBA file server at home and 7 would never remember the server password on boot. I would have to go manually reconnect the network drive.

I guess 7 just didn't like any of my passwords.

Running it with office 2007 and virtual pc and it is pretty solid. this is 'odd bleeding edge' in that if you use the latest of everything (including hardware) it runs really REALLY well.

I was running it on a Core2Quad Q9550 with 4GB RAM, ATI 4850 1GB, etc.

Ran very nicely. That was not my complaint.

I just have to suck up and buy Office 2007/2010...or just move to Open Office.

odds are that you can still get office 2007 in that steal promotion for $50. It's a great suite and for $50 it's a no brainer.

The more I use 7, the more headaches that keep popping up:

1. only installed one game (COD 5) and it crashes persistently. I'm getting tired of playing the same level 5 times.
2. missing firefox plug in cannot be auto found/installed.
3. outlook still not opening, even in compatibility mod.

I'm starting to agree w/ GT that this OS isn't ready for prime time.

Most XP to Win7 users have had positive comments on Win7 RC ,going from Vista to Win7 RC is not as big of a jump and its down to the user if he thinks its worth the upgrade,I plan to upgrade one PC to Win7 and keep the rest on Vista SP2,folders are not an issue for me either since I normally just type in the search box for what I'm looking for(Indexing on).I'm a fan of Open Office too so not worried about Office 2007 etc....

RTM version wise we don't know what internal changes there will be at this time, throw in Windows Update plus service pack as well so still quite a few unknown factors/improvements for Win7 down the road, remember it does not end with RTM,as it stands right now its a very good OS based on Vista with a few tweaks and improvements.

Every OS needs polish from RC state IMHO,you don't see the best it offers until the service pack is out (look at XP and Vista, not at its best until service pack or two was out) ,by then drivers are mature too for a lot of hardware.
