Win7 or not to Win7? Should I upgrade now or wait?

Ok here are my main PC specs so everyone knows what I am working with.

AMD64 X2 6000+ (3Ghz dual core)
Biostar TF560 A2+ mobo
4GB DDR2-800 PNY Optima RAM
Radeon 4850HD
WD Raptor(s) 2x 74GB SATA1.5 10k RPMs (RAID0, for system)
WD Caviar 320GB SATA3 7200RPM (files)

I normally run 64bit Debian Linux, but I am starting back to college and instead of just running XP on VirtualBox I am going to have to switch them up at least until I get my degree in programming finished.

I purchased the disappointment Vista 32bit Homo Premium back when it came out. It took 2 years it seems to get to running good on my system, that and disabling indexing service. I was thinking about getting 64bit Win7 HP. But I am not sure if now is a good time or should I wait for the release of the first service pack? I dont want to jump into Win7 like I did Vista and drivers not be available or worth a crap.

Whats you guys / gals thoughts? Should I get 64bit Win7 or wait?

Thanks,

Exodist

The shift from Vista to 7 is not nearly as radical as the shift from XP to Vista. Many Vista drivers work just fine in 7, and 7 does not seem to be suffering from the same early growing pains that Vista did.

Companies that created drivers for Vista will either have a Win7 variation, or those drivers will work in Win7. However, don't expect any new driver development from companies that skipped Vista.

Many thanks everyone.
Seeing that most dont have any issues with it, the biggest thing about running Vista on my system is that I got the 32bit version instead of the 64 as I should have. So from Vista 32 to Win7 64 may be a fairly good upgrade. Besides it eats at my rear that I am running 32bit :D

Going from Vista 32 to 7 Pro 64 bit couldn't have been any smoother for me.

I also made the switch from vista 32bit to Win7 64bit and had no trouble at all. At first I thought I would have some hick-ups but in the end, most things turned out to be a non issue. I can't get the APE extension to work on winamp, for example. I just use another player and all is fine.

SP1 and better driver support. Well that is what I was asking about..

It is not like Win 7 RTM does worse than tweaked Vista SP2.

In general Win 7 would every thing that Vista does and a little better, so from this perspective there is No point to wait.

Thus the issue is not switching from Vista to Win7, but switching to x64.

I.e. Win 7 x64 will do better than Vista x64, but both might have drivers issues.

There is 3rd party software and hardware vendors that do not bother to provide x64 drivers. So you have to check before you move that there are drivers available for your specified needs.

Unless there is some special circumstances Microsoft does not write drivers for 3rd party hardware, and applications.

The drivers that are included in the release of the OS' are drivers submitted to Microsoft by the original vendors.

If a vendor does not care about writing x64 drivers, or does not want to submit the one that they wrote because they deviate from solid standard, the drivers will not be on included in the RTM/SP or whatever release.

I am going back to college in 3 1/2 weeks since I am out of work due to the economy and I need to spend my GI Bill money I worked for in the military. But anyway they are part of the MS Academic Alliance and I will get to download full version Win7 Pro for free since I will be a programming student. So guess that will work.. :)
