I just started using Win7.

In WinXP, i can make my network icons (ethernet + wireless) visible on the taskbar.

Control Panel (Select View by Category) >> Appearance Personalization >> Taskbar and Start Menu >> Customize icons on the taskbar

click Bottom Left (always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar

or unclick it and select Network

Actually you have complete control. Control Panel, the Notification Area Icons. You then can select which you want displayed and when. The default is whenever they have something to tell you. The same checkbox suggested above is there, but that may be overkill. Select the ones you want when you want to see them.
