Win7. How to change color of window background?

For example, in the screenshot below the background is white. the settings available to change the theme do not allow me to change that particular element of the UI. I don't want change icons or anything else, just that white background. And I want to do it without installing hacked DLLs.

Is it possible? It can be easily done in XP.

It is misleading. In personalize, go to windows Color - then Advanced Appearance Settings. It brings up the old XP menu.

But when you change the background color, then press ok, nothing changes. The dialog box does change (to indicate you picked a new color), but that particular change will not be applied.

To do that you must all manual -no canned theme. It works for me.

What do you mean? Is there a Registry tweak for that? I know I can do it (via UI or Registry) if I use the Windows Classic theme.

Sorry - read the caveat presented. To make color changes, etc., you must be in one of two themes. This is due to Aero.

Read all the traffic referenced by stargzr. Basically, to make changes you need to turn AERO off.

I have never used Aero and have tried applying the background color several times. It never worked. I'll try it again by changing the "theme" file. I'll report back the result.

Thanks for the help! 🙂

I just tried it again. Windows Explorer remains glaring white. Changing the "Window" value via UI results in the respective valve changing inside the "theme" file. In fact, there's no reason to change the file. The problem is that changing the "Window" value (via UI or theme file) does not affect the background of Windows Explorer.

When you guys say that Aero must be disabled, you mean I must be running the "Windows Classic" theme (Win 95/98/2000)? Ordo you mean the toned down version of the Win7 theme (with transparency off)? Maybe my Aero is still on I and don't know.

I've be running Win Classic for months because I can't stand that glaring white inside Windows Explorer.

After some more reading, I realize that what I want is only possible when using the "Windows Classic" theme. 🙁
