Win7 backup system image and restore hosed my HD somehow. I was testing it and the backup-restore worked twice until the third time it hung at the BIOS detecting the SATA port in AHCI mode after completing the restore. Note, this worked twice before without issue.

It's not the HD, the cable or the port.

Changing the port just causes that # to hang at BIOS. Disconnecting it allows POSTing to proceed. It works in IDE mode but not AHCI.

Google for asus+ahci+hang and you'll find something has changed with the MBR or the partition somehow that causes the AHCI auto detection to mess up: http://vip.asus.com/forum/view...SLanguage=en-us&page=1

Vista/Win7 is a beast I'm not too familiar with since it no longer uses MBR, uses its own separate hidden system partition in addition to C:.

I'm going to restore and set it to IDE and have the system drivers retect and move forward using IDE I guess. Too bad, since AHCI allows for full SATA hotswap spec and other things.
