Hi

I'm experiencing a problem running my new own-built computer. First of all I will detail the components of the computer.

CPU: i7 2600K
Mobo: Asus P8Z68V-Pro
RAM: 2 x 4Gb G.Skill Ripjaws X DDR3 1600 PC3-12800
SSD OCZ Vertex 3 120Gb (OS and Programs)
HD Spindle 500 Gb SATA3 (Data Storage)
Power: Tacens Valeo III 600w
OS: Win7 Professional OEM
GPU: Onboard GPU

The problem is that when running the computer it randomly freezes. For freezing I mean that I can move the mouse but the program or operations that I'm running at that moment are freezed. For example: if copying files the bar does not advance, Itunes window freezed (like if it were thinking). and so on. If I try to acces the quickstart icons or the start Icon it won't work (freezed). Desktop Icons shine upon placing the mouse on them but if double clicking they won't work and shine anymore. If I press Crtl+Alt+Del nothing happens at first. I say at first because if I'm lucky and wait a couple of minutes then finally I get the screen with the options (shut dowd, tasks Administrator, etc..). Then if I close that window it continues running normally. But most of the times I have to reboot the computer. I've noticed that when this "freezing" happens the red led for the HD/SSD is permanently lightened.

I would like to know if somebody has an idea of what could be the problem. For me is seems that something maybe wrong with the ssd or the configuration for the ssd. Does anybody has experienced the same or similar problem? What steps should I take to identify the problem (Mobo, RAM, SSD, OS....). I do not want to go to a Computer Repair Shop because I have only guarantee for each single component as far as I bought the parts myself (internet shop) and built at my own risk.
So it would mean paying. First I would like to see if I can solve it.

Help will be very much appreciated! Thank you in advance!!

Have you tried reinstalling Win7 on the 500GB drive without the SSD in the system?

That's what I've planned to do first. Well first I will upgrade my CPU fan. I'm using the intel's one. Somebody has told me that could be a temperature issue. Then I will test and if it keeps freezing then I'll install win7 on the 500Gb. Let's see what happens. Anyway until the weekend I will not be able to spare some hours to work on it :-(

Thank you for your help!

I have almost the same build as you, 2500k, 120gb Vertex 3, Asus P8P67, 2 X 4gb G Skill RAM. Mine will freeze up at some point in the first 5 minutes of booting into windows. Sometimes it will only freeze up for 30 seconds, sometimes longer. Now it's getting worse and it never un-freezes. Very frustrating

I'd leave the stock heatsink alone for now and focus on the hard drives. The stock heatsinks may let your processor run warmer, but they are sufficient for proper, stock computer operation.

I'd follow the first suggestion - install Windows on the hard disc drive and continue from there. Also, make sure your SATA cables have been properly inserted into the motherboard ports and into the backs of the drives.

By the way, is your BIOS set to AHCI or IDE for the hard drive controller?

i had similar problems for over a year with a similar system. in my case it ended up being a bad stick of those ripjaw ram. it was an absolute nightmare to troubleshoot because the ram passes all memtests.

i would try looking at the achi bios settings first (might work better in ide compatible mode), and then try taking out a stick of ram, then if that doesnt work swap ram modules to see if there are any improvements.

I was going to say, for an SSD, it might work better in AHCI mode. Just be sure to install the AHCI driver for your board once Windows is installed.

For example, on my own system: my second hard drive would disappear after waking up with the default W7 AHCI driver. Installing the AMD driver fixed that right up.

Check your Event Viewer for errors. Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button and type Event Viewer in the search box.
