Win7 drag-n-drop / taskbar bug

In XP, you used to be able to drag-and-drop items, by clicking and dragging onto the taskbar, onto a window icon, which would cause that window to appear on top, and then you could finish dragging and dropping onto that window.

This is broken in Win7.

I clicked a web link in IE8 and dragged it to the taskbar, and onto the file folder icon (Windows Explorer), and instead of the explorer window popping to the top, it just flashed the icon a few times, and didn't do much.

This is progress???

Even worse, if I manually click on the file folder icon to bring the window to the forefront, and then click and drag the URL link icon from IE8, it automatically makes the IE8 window topmost, thus defeating the drag-n-drop. In fact, it seems like drag-n-drop is HEAVILY crippled in Win7. Unless you can tile your windows side-by-side to drag-n-drop, it seems like you cannot do it.

It's working for me. I can drag a link from either IE or FF to the explorer icon in the taskbar and the window pops up allowing me to drop it there. W7 Ultimate here.

Larry, if you hate Win7 so much, why don't you use something else? 😕

It seems like all you've done for the last month is start threads complaining about it.

May be someone gave him a free copy of Windows 3.11 and told him it is Win 7. :hmm:

I thought I liked Win7. But the more I use it, the more I get annoyed, when things that used to work in XP no longer seem to work in Win7.

Ok, here's my test scenario, click on IE8 icon, open window. Click on Explorer icon, open window. Make the IE8 window full-screen and topmost. Now click the URL bar icon, and drag to the taskbar, onto the Explorer icon, and wait for it to open/become topmost.

On my machine, it just flashes yellow about 4 times, like it wants to do something but cannot.

Edit: I just tried it with Firefox 3.6beta4, and works fine. I wonder why it's broken with IE8? Something to do with "Protected Mode", perhaps?

What do you have UAC set at?

Larry,
I can't for the life of me understand WHY you would want to do it that way, BUT . . . here is a solution just for you:

Open IE8 then click Win= left arrow, open Explorer then click Win + right arrow. now you can not only drag and drop between programs, but you can also decide where in Explorer you want the link.
