Whenever I open a desktop folder it seems as though windows explorer is opening because there's a left hand pane list. For example I right click on an unused area of desktop and select create new folder. With-in the folder I put shortcuts to some programs. When I open the new desktop folder I created there's a left pane as though I had opened Windows Explorer. WinXP, all I would see is a square window with only icons to the shortcuts, not all the extra "Windows Explorer" left pane stuff.
There a way to customize Win7x64 regarding this issue?

Open the Folder click (at the Top) on organize, in the pulled down menu click on Layout.

Uncheck every thing and you will get clean "square" folder.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I did as you instructed and in my drop down for desktop folder zGames organize\layout there are 4 items: Menu bar, Detail pane, Preview pane Navigation pane. It was the Navigation Pane that was the culprit. Thank you very much for helping me out with this.

The left pane is controlled by the "Navigation Pane" checkbox, as JackMDS suggested.

Perhaps we are still referring to different things? Can you post a screenshot of what you want to turn off?
