Win7 compatibility feature (with XP) FTW

I've been doing the computer work for an auto repair shop for a few months. Owner recently purchased a new netbook with Win7 Basic to replace an older one with WinXP because the USB ports were going wonky on it.

He tries to install the diagnostic software (IDS) from Ford Motor Company that interfaces with the onboard PROMs via proprietary cable, but it won't install because 'operating system not supported'. I checked the website and they have in big bold letters "NOT supported under Windows Vista or 7, only XP/2000!!"

He wanted me to wipe Win7 from the netbook and install XP, but instead, I tried installing the program using the "run this program in compatibility mode for" feature Windows XP SP3.

Installed without incident. Just in case, I went a step further and did the same for the program executable (not just the installer) and the program works fine. He has used it daily for over a week now.

Excellent news. I have a buddy that runs dyno software that is only compatible with xp or older. I will try this. Thanks!

It depends on the nature of the conflict.

In many cases your solution works.

In other cases using Win 7 Pro/Ulti/Ent and the XP Mode works well too.

In some cases Nothing works, unless you Install XP.

I forgot to explain how to do it, in case someone doesn't know. Right-click on the INSTALL EXECUTABLE (e.g. setup.exe, appname.exe), select Properties. Switch to the Compatibility tab, check the box for 'Run this program in compatibility for' and select Windows XP SP2/SP3 from the menu. Also tick Run as Administrator. Click Apply, then OK. Run to install the application like normal.

I don't know if the next step is required or not, but after the app is installed, locate the application executable, or any short-cut to launch the app. Then do the same thing, except don't check Run as Administrator. Some apps might need Run as Administrator here, too, but most shouldn't.
