Win7, auto defrag, task scheduler return code 0x103

I tried googling for it but I haven't had any luck - a laptop refuses to run the Disk Defragmenter as a scheduled task (it says it last defragmented the volume in June 2011), and task scheduler gives a return code of 0x103, which I can't find a definitive explanation for anywhere.

There aren't any related errors in the event log, and boot optimisation is being done at the time that the defrag is usually done, but no defrag entries for the disk.

The only idea I've got is to run a full disk check on the disk.

If anyone knows of an explanation for that task scheduler return code, I'd very much like to know.

It initiates successfully (though I need to check whether it concludes successfully as well). I'm wondering what the dependencies are for a scheduled defrag, apart from Task Scheduler (other tasks seem to be running normally).

If it does conclude successfully, it blows the idea of a full chkdsk out of the water.
