Win7 64 - Unable to resume from S3 standby/sleep

Computer goes into standby fine, but then there's about a 50/50 chance that it won't resume correctly - power light flashes to indicate sleep mode, but nothing will get it to resume, even holding down the power button for five seconds doesn't switch the machine off.

I then switch the power off at the PSU, switch it back on again, and it then resumes Windows as if nothing unusual happened.

Occasionally, there's an error in the system log saying that the "Shell Hardware Mixed Content Handler" failed to respond to a DCOM request in a timely fashion.

It's an entirely new computer build, spec as follows:

AMD Athlon II X2 250
4GB DDR3-1333 Crucial RAM (tested with memtestx86 v4.0)
ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 (I have the same board for my own machine, works fine), in AHCI mode
onboard graphics (HD 4290)
500GB WD Black
LiteON DVD Writer
Corsair CX430

Win7 64 HP SP1, all updates installed. I've already tried a wipe-clean install. No other errors in the event log. The board's BIOS is also up-to-date.

I've used almost all the same drivers as for my own system, except the AMD software which I'm now going to try even though I know the version I use to work, as it worked on mine fine.

I've tried to use the Windows Performance Tools Kit and this guide to get more information to go on:
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/140247-trace-windows-7-bootshutdownhibernatestandbyresume-issues/

But the summary XML output is difficult to glean useful information from. The only two things I've determined from it are that the unsuccessful resume took longer than the successful ones (surprise surprise, it takes a while longer to boot the computer rather than resume!) and that it had to use the hibernation data to do it (also not a great surprise). This is the first time that I've used this trace software, so I don't really know what I'm looking for.

Help! :)

Across three versions of Windows, numerous Motherboards and hardware combinations...sleep has always been this way for me. I've given up the idea of using it as it's obviously never going to be fixed.

I know that S3 standby can work with Win7 64 and this mobo as my own PC has the same board without the problem. The only thing I can think of trying now, just to provide a variation in the normal setup routine I do is to install Windows in IDE mode to see if that makes any difference.

It's frustrating to say the least to explain the whole issue to ASUS support, then about twelve hours later they reply with "have you tried checking the option 'allow this device to bring the computer out of standby?'". Their second suggestion was relevant but I had already tried it (disabling hybrid sleep - which is a safety feature that takes a snapshot of the RAM and writes it to disk hibernation file, then the computer goes into S3 mode).

I've also tried a complete BIOS reset (taking the battery out for a few minutes, as opposed to the BIOS option 'load setup defaults').
