My problems with installing 2 extra sticks of memory last weekend.

I was getting a BSOD on the ATi driver with 2 sticks installed.
With some searching, I now have 4gb installed.

However, Win7 only sees 2gb.
BIOS says 4096
CPU-Z says 4096

Task Manager and Win7 info says 2.0gb.

MSCONFIG advanced options won't allow 4096 now.

My other threads are in Memory Forum here ... link and in Video Cards here ... link

Has anyone had this problem?

I found some info about setting PAE and DEP modes in VISTA for same problem here , but did not work either.

And, now I see reference to Video Cards 'holding' memory mapping that causes additional memory not to be recognized.

Help please.

Try this, stolen from another forum...

msconfig/boot/Advanced Options Untick maximum memory then reboot.

I'm assuming that this is on the system in your signature. If so, it is limited by the maximum amount of ram that the mobo can handle. This is what i found doing a quick google on your mobo.

Memory
Three 184-pin DIMM sockets
Supports 3 DIMM DDR 200/266/333 (Max. 3 GB)
Supports 2 DIMM DDR 400 (Max. 2 GB)

Good catch, I was about to suggest checking the bios to see how much ram the system detects

According to his BIOS, the RAM works.

According to his BIOS, the RAM works.

I had a ThinkPad T60 with 4 GB of ram installed in it. The Bios and Windows system information both reported 4 GB, but task manager only showed 3 GB because the chipset on the motherboard was only capable of addressing 3 GB of ram.

That laptop had a 32-bit CPU and 32-bit OS (max RAM 3GB+). In the OP's case, even Win7 32-bit should still see at least 3GB of RAM.

Wow, I must have a magical 32 bit processor that allowed me to install Windows Server 2008 64bit, Hyper-V, Windows Vista 64bit, and Windows 7 64bit.

Ok, so you didn't have the original T60, lucky you.

OP should still see 3GB minimum with 4GB installed.

Wow, you've cross-posted this to two other categories here (three in all, which you should know is not allowed) and still have not managed to give any information about your system hardware (e.g. the motherboard make and model, BIOS version, etc). Are you doing work for the CIA and thus cannot disclose any meaningful information without a security clearance?

All voltages back to defaults.
Only memory timings altrered (from CAS 2.0 3 3 8 1T)

However, Win7 only sees 2gb.

BIOS says 4096
CPU-Z says 4096

Task Manager and Win7 info says 2.0gb.

MSCONFIG advanced options won't allow 4096 now.

Based on the info above, I am guessing that this is your mobo.

Memory
- Supports Dual Channel DDR400 non-ECC, un-buffered memory
- DIMM slots: 4
- Max. capacity of system memory: 4GB*

*Due to the operating system limitation, the actual memory size may be less than 4GB for the reservation for system usage under Windows® XP. For Windows® XP 64-bit with 64-bit CPU, there is no such limitation.

HOLY CRAP !@!!!

I changed the MSCONFIG back to 0 and unchecked the memory box. Then rebooted.

My BSOD returned on the ATi driver !!!! (On the atikmdag.sys again)

So I rebooted in SAFE mode, which Win7 says I have 4.0 GB again !!!
MSCONFIG again allows me to change to 4096 !!!!

So I did .. and no more BSOD !!! But Win7 says I only have 2GB again !!!

That is my motherboard, and yes, I am using 64 bit Win7 Pro Retail.

MSCONFIG -> advanced boot options -> clear the checkmark next to Maximum Memory, then reboot

tscenter --- I did !! and my BSOD returned !!!

So I am not BSOD, but Win7 says I have only 2GB.

I did a little test ... I went back into SAFE mode. (Now That Im not BSOD)
Looked at system specs,,, it says I have only 2GB now. ( safe mode )

I checked the box again, and it only allows 2048 !!!

So, NOT in safe mode (Win7 says I have only 2GB) , I uncheck this box ---- I BSOD.

I reboot in SAFE mode, Win7 says I have 4GB.
Open MSCONFIG.
I check this box, with 4096, and apply.
I go back into advanced options, ---- the 4096 disappeared ! Only box is checked.

I reenter 4096, but it doesn't save.

Ok, so I reboot with no value in box, but its checked.
My BSOD disappears, but Win7 says I have only 2GB again.

Your problem most likely is with the mobo BIOS which is screwing up the MMIO ranges for the graphics card or other hardware when 4GB is installed. Not too many mobo BIOS from 2005 handle this kind of thing well.

Try installing 3GB instead. e.g. 1GB + 1GB and 512MB + 512MB

Unfortunately, I only have 256 sticks.
OK, I guess there is no point in keeping these sticks in this gaming LAN box.

I did look for some BIOS mods but didnt find anyone making them for my MB.

But I did find a newer SIS driver set.
( Was unable to download without joining their website )

Do you think a driver dated this year for the 756 chipset would help?
(They say it works for W7)
