Win2kserver and xp

my goal is to setup my win2server box as router tomy XP machine here at college.

the 2kserver box is a striped down HP vectra vli8 700mhz. My XP machine is the nice one.

i don't have switch or a router, and am not planning on buying one, so what is the best way to do this.

I tried internet-win2kser-XP machine, but i don't now enough to mess with it in great lethgs.

Can ayone help me or refer to a site that can.

You want to put 2 NICS in your 2k server box

then, you can simply enable ICS (internet connection sharing) on tcp/ip for your main nic (the one that goes to the wall)

on the second nic, set the IP address to 192.168.0.1 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0

then, on the XP machine, keep all tcp/ip settings on "obtain automatically" and your 2k server box will effectively become a router

oh yeah, and at some colleges, it's against policy to do this...but you could always assume you're the exception

would the unmentioned option of wheedling my parents out of their router be against policy too?

all i want is a fileserver for my own pc. I have alot of crap that i do not want to put on my main pc..such as m3 divx etc. I also have video editing going on, and want to save it somewhere else...that is IF i CAN get the router(smc barricade--they aren't using it anymore....but still have to sneak t out of the house...hehe).

p.s, i would also like to use it as an ftp for MYSELF or a website to access my stuff( i think we can have aminimal bandwidth site for personal use) hence win2k server..but i guess that is overkill. Do you think win2k is fine, or overkil as well?

frankly, win2k server is probably overkill...2k pro has ICS as well which will work fine, and you can run ftp server use "serve-u" or "warftp" or some other third party ftp server

yes, anytime you're sharing your dorm connection with more than one computer it breaks policy at a lot of schools...but like I said, i have no clue if that's true where you go

your 'rents router would be much simpler to configure...but 2 nics in a win2k box would work just as well if you can't get the router from them
