Win2kPro & Games (Are they Compatible?)

Greetings:

I'm in the process of building a new PC (PII 933, 256 ram, Cheetah 15k rpm HD, etc) and I really prefer not to deal with a dual boot scenerio. From everything I'm reading it seems the best OS in the Windows world is Win2kPro.

My question very simply for those of you that play games, are you finding any problems running them using this OS?

btw: The games on my PC at the moment are; Red Alert 2, Asherons Call, Baldaurs Gate 2 and Diablo 2.

Of course I use my computer primarily for work which consists of Microsoft Office type progys primarily; but I enjoy gaming as a hobby.

Thank you very much in advance for your feedback.

As far as I've seen those games should run in Win2k. I know for a fact that Diablo 2 and RA2 will work in Win2k, but not quite sure about BG2 and AC.

I don't run Win2k simply because the ATi Radeon Drivers suck for win2k :| :disgust:

I love Win2k for work, but gaming it just can't cut it for me.

Thanks Radeon.

Sorry to hear the ATI and Win2kPro are not compatible. I'm surprised actually. The two vid cards I am considering are either the "Hercules Prophet II Ultra 64mb", or the "Creative 3D Blaster Annihilator Ultra 64mb". The Creative has a faster core processor speed so I assume it would be a better choice but the lack of reviews on it at this date make me unsure.

I'll have to check and see what the experience has been of others using either of these cards with Win2kPro. Sounds from what your saying that if the Vid Card I'm considering will work well with Win2kPro, I should go that route.

Thanks again,

Most of my games run just fine under w2k. UT actually runs better in w2k than it does on WinME! It doesnt work on my laptop w2k though. Must be a bad install.

I don't know if it's just an NVIDA issue, but games in win2k will take a drastic hit. In win98se playing counterstrike, I get 99fps constant at 1024x768. In win2k, I need to go to 640x480 and then i still get choppiness from time to time.

256mb pc-133 cas-2
Creative Annihilator 2 32meg

my system isnt the problem, its the stupid drivers and microsoft incompatabilities.

been loving gaming on my w2kp box. incredibly stable. you do take a performance hit tho...but drivers have typically been written for non-gamming apps. this is changing, and quickly it seems, so expect to see significant improvements over time.

in short, no problems, just a performance hit, but after a bunch of HW upgrades, i still get a great improvement.

I'm dual-booting W2K and WinMe. I use 2K for most things, but my gamepad doesn't work in 2K(if there are drivers for it, I'm too lazy to look for them), and Madden 2001 doesn't work in 2K. But all my other games work fine.

bigshooter, I use Win2k and is CS it's smooth like butta even running through a smoke bomb. And that's with a V3 3000.

BG2 works in Win2K, I played it. Also I found the oppisite of what people say. I saw a average 1-2FPS INCREASE across the board with Win2K.

I had problems running Quake 2, but that's it. I tried latest drivers, patches, etc.. didn't help. 🙁

the radeon works in win2k, the 3d is just really slow with the current official drivers. I've heard from my friend (hawk on this board) that the special non-supported drivers are good, then again others like kyle from hardocp say that the only time win2k has crashed for him is with a radeon. Supposedly new drivers that are official are supposed to come out any day now, so i'd wait and see. That and anyone who is insane enough to buy a gf2 ultra for a 15% performance increase should give me $100 and slap themselves.
