win2k3 login automaticly

Is there a way to make win2k3 login automaticly as a specified user when it starts up? I can't seem to find such option, and realizing servers arn't meant to be logged in I can understand why, but in my case I need to as I'm using some server software that does not run as a service. The backend of that software is actually very terrible from a server admin point of view but there are no alternatives to it.

The auto logon feature works quite well when needed, we use it on all of our PC controlled production machines... You need to just be aware of this in the KB Article # 324737:

" Additionally, when autologon is turned on, the password is stored in the registry in plain text. The specific registry key that stores this value can be remotely read by the Authenticated Users group. This setting is only recommended for cases it which the computer is physically secured and steps have been taken to make sure that untrusted users cannot remotely access the registry. "

Just so ya know.

Ditto what pcgeek11 posted. We use the AutoAdminLogon feature on a number of our public workstations, with security provided via GPOs. 🙂

Although I know from experience that the same will work on servers, I'd be really reluctant to do so unless you absolutely know there's no possibility of un-authorized persons getting to that server, 'cuz you'd be leaving the server console wide open as it were.

Cool thanks. Yeah I'm aware of the security issues but this is an internal home server so it should be fine. I could always make sure it's locked too, and that remote registry is off.

edit: Ok I did it what it says but it does not work. I even disabled stuff like requiring ctrl+alt+del to begin to see if maybe that was blocking it. the username/pass are valid. Any other steps to this that the article does not mention?
