Win2K with Partition Magic 4.0 ***UPDATED AGAIN*** YES! possible!!!

I just got Partition Magic 4.0 for really cheap ($11.50 - see Hot Deals).

Can I make a partition for WIN2000 within WIN98SE (my current O/S) or must I upgrade to the latest version?

Does anyone have experience with this (older) software?

apoppin--Yes, should not be a problem. At least if it's a DOS partition. I'm not sure if 4.* can handle the 2K NTFS or not (I'm thinking it's a bit different?).

I would suggest that you get the latest patch for 4.*. If for some reason you can't do it from within 98, you can just make the DOS floppies and run from there. You will probably have to move/manipulate some partitions, but it will work.

Sometimes I find it runs better from 9x, and sometimes from DOS. As I recall, it can be really picky about having enough conventional memory available, and, for me, running from W9x can prevent some of those errors.

However, when I called Powerquest, they said NO, the older version does not support the Win2K files system and I MUST upgrade to the latest version.

It doesn't support NTFS but that doesn't matter.. All you want to do is create the partition for Win2K. After you install it then convert to NTFS...

No, it doesn't run from W2K.

Yes, it will make FAT16 and FAT32 partitions, and move them. It doesn't care what OS you install in the partition later.

I seriously doubt that the Powerquest people misunderstood my question or were confused. I just think they are intent in seling their upgrade ($29.95 + tax + approx $7.00 shipping).

apoppin--I'm sorry if I gave you incorrect information. I just can't get my mind around the situation. If PM cannot create a partition that you can install W2K in, its gotta be:

1. W2K must create its own partition on install.

2. W2K requires a different sized/clustered partition than PM 4.* can make.

3. W2K must install on a non-DOS, non-NT4 NTFS partition.

I am simply not aware that any of the above are true. I'll email my Dad and see if he has a clue. However, he is using PM 6.*, I believe.

if you're using fat32, then u can use pm4. just browse around the cds and make the boot floppies. then boot and there's partition magic. only pm6 runs natively in w2k, but all the other ones can modify fat32 partitions just fine.

I am certain there is probably a workaround with PM 4.0 and Win2K.

However, I found whenever I try to save a few bucks it costs me far more time and money in the long run.

For peace of mind, I spent the $30 and upgraded to PM 6.0. Plus, now I get Powerquest's (excellent) tech support (which expired last year on ver 4.0).

What is the problem???? You said you have win98SE installed right??? Then all ya have to do is install PM and then do its thing... Create a FAT32 partition for win2K to be install on to... There is nothing else you have to do....

You guys were right. Here's the 2nd e-mail I got from PowerQuest Tech Support this morning:

You can create a partition for Windows 2000 with Parititon Magic 4.0 but you cannot run the program within Windows2000 since it isn't supported. We also do not support version 4.0 of Partition Magic anymore as of Last November. We will not be able to support you with any problems that may occur in the future. We would fully recommend upgrading to the latest version which is Partition Magic 6.0.

What a great experience with a company (PowerQuest)!

I called Misty in customer service and explained what happened (that I didn't really need to upgrade but did based on the first e-mail).

She said &quot;No problem, we'll just credit your credit card.&quot; She also apologized for the mininfo.

So, I'm back to Ver.4.0 and will install Win2k from Win98SE. (Although I would still consider an upgrade in the future from them when I am less cash-poor.)

P.S.: You guys are really really helpful.
