Just got a p4 3.06 for a bargain price, I currently have win2k installed, but I want the Hyperthreading which is better suported in winxp. I should be able to install over win2k but I would rather not lose any programs as I have loads installed and it would be a nightmare having to re-install 35odd programs.
Anyone with any useful comments/tips?

When changing operating systems, most of the time you do need to reinstall the programs. Some will work but many will not. Even if they do work, it may be more of a headache because of errors you will get.

Though, this is better suited for the OS Forum, I will add my 2 cents here.

When going from a NT based OS to a NT based OS (ie Win 2000 to Win XP) you are generally okay, as they have the same basic kernal. This prevents most of the incompatabilities of upgrading a 9x system to XP. I've done this a couple times with no trouble. But, as someone mentioned, you could have problems later that may be avoided by doing a clean upgrade. As always, your results may vary.

another vote for the clean install.

otherwise, you are going to have to run each of those 35Odd programs and then try to figure out if they need removed, reinstalled, tweaked... etc..

you just aren't going to save that much time.

If you 'lost' the disks for those programs..... I highly recommend NOT upgrading the OS.
