Win2k <-> WinXP Firewire (IEEE 1394) Networking

I'm interested in setting up a network connection (to transfer some files) between a laptop running win2k and my desktop running winxp via firewire. Anyone know the proper way to do this? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

mike3411, I wouldn't count on this even being possible with Win2K and XP out of the box. I don't see anything in these operating systems that would make use of a Firewire port for networking. I see a way to use parallel, serial, and infrared ports to do direct connect networking. In theory someone could write a network driver that could make use of the Firewire port for networking.

I think your best bet would be to just use 10/100Mbs Ethernet network cards in each computer and connect them using a crossover CAT5 cable.

I typed firewire network into WinXP help. One of the knowledge base articles (q310433) says, in part,

"IEEE 1394 on Windows XP.

Windows XP has built-in IEEE 1394 support. To use all the capabilities of the IEEE 1394 standard, your computer must have an IEEE 1394 adapter installed. If your computer has a FireWire adapter, the adaptor is IEEE 1394 compatible. Some of the capabilities of a Windows XP-based computer with the IEEE 1394 standard are:

Instant network connectivity by plugging two or more computers together (no additional hardware or software required)."

So, if both your machines were XP, it sounds to me like it would be pretty simple. Hopefully win2k can do it too.

I don't think win2k supports it, so I upgraded the laptop to xp, which seems to kinda work, but I still can't get either machine to connect to the other (although one was able to see the other, when i tried to actually access it said the path was not found). I hate the way XP handles networking, I can't abide using wizards to set stuff up.
