Win2K & WinMe File Sharing

For some reason, WinMe is unable to access my Win2K computer. It says access denied before it even gives me a password prompt. I already set up an account on Win2K with the login name on the WinMe computer. In fact, this is the exact same set up I had on Win98 before I installed WinMe and it had worked... now it doesn't anymore.

Any ideas?

Hmm... strange, it seems to work now for some reason...

Oh well... another question... WinMe seems to be very, very slow when browsing the Network. Any ideas how to speed it up? I tried making the default protocol to NetBEUI (a suggestion in an earlier post) instead of TCP/IP and it doesn't make a difference... I still have to wait up to a minute each time I open a network resource for anything to appear.

Well, if one of your machines is Windows 2000 that you're trying to access..that could be why. It seems Microsoft has updated some of the network protocols or maybe improved their security..I'm not sure, but I know there's been a significant increase in time it takes to browse the network in Win2k. As of yet I haven't found anything that could fix this or really any answers as to exactly what the cause is. Perhaps it's a WinNT thing 🙂

Well, the network I'm on is across our entire dorm, so there's all kinds of machines on it. My friend who also has WinMe on the same network doesn't have this problem though.

I have asked this on another forum, but I guess i will ask it again here. I have exactly the same setup, winme and win2k. My winme doesn't have a login (using windows login and no login screen when startup). Is there any way I can connect to the win2k system and access files there? Thanks.

You want to go into the the "Users and Passwords" in control panel on the Win 2k machine. Go to the advanced tab, then click the "Advanced Button." Enable the guest account (it's disabled on default). Then, when you right click on a folder to share, set the permissions as "Guest." This allows anyone to access that folder, just like sharing stuff on Win95/98. If you want to share to a specific person, you have to set them up with an account and they log in with their password. But I'm assuming you want everyone to have the ability to access it. Anyway, it's a bit different from 98, but that should solve your probs.
