Having big problems trying to setup network between Win2K and WinMe/98. Hardware is fine (4 PCs, Linksys router). Win2K machine is dual boot and network works great when booted with WinMe. Win2K setup on same harware was working fine until I reinstalled Win2K and now network doesn't function well. I can see everyone on the network and transferring small files (<100kb)is usually OK but everything is very, very slow. I get error messages halfway through larger file transfers saying "Network Name is No Longer Valid" or "path too deep". Even when Win2K is having problems, the other 3 machines (WinMe/98) function normally and can transfer among themselves with no problem. This indicates to me that it is a Win2K setting problem. Am I correct? Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Are you running any other protocols on your WinME machines besides TCP/IP, like maybe NetBeui?? For a small, local lan running all windows machines, NetBeui is the protocol of choice for file sharing. It is fast, and peer to peer. BUT, it is not routable. If you are only using TCP/IP on your lan, then I would say you have a RWIN/MTU/MAXMTU mismatch somewhere, and that is why you are having speed problems. Try running NetBeui on all your machines, and see how much quicker your file sharing is, though.

Netbui is enabled over TCP/IP. The check box is greyed out in the WinMe TCP/IP properties box and I can't change it.I checked the equivalent box in Win2K and still have problems. All computers on the network can access the cable modem alright it is just file and printer sharing that is giving me a headache. Any other settings I should try?

Netbios over TCP/IP is not the same as running NetBeui. To use Netbeui, you need to go to each machine's network properties, and then do an add->protocol->microsoft->Netbeui. Let it install all files, and then reboot. Then try your file sharing. I believe you will be very pleasantly suprised at the results.

with my win98 w2k network. i'm just using tcp/ip. just give every box an ip in the same range, make sure the subnets are the same and put them into the same workgroup and you should be fine. Also play with some of the settings on your network cards. try just 10mbps then go to 100mbps if that works ok.
