Win2k + Win98 peer-to-peer?

Hi all, I need to network some Win2k machines with some Win98 machines. Never having used Win2k before, is this possible to do peer-to-peer, using Microsoft Networking, like I've done using Win98? How do you set up the Win2k machines with (manual) IPs and such? The brief time I spent checking out the networking stuff on the Win2k machine I couldn't find where to set the IP like I would in a Win98 machine. Can anyone help, or point me to a page that would help?

as far as i know, it works...a friend of mine networked his new comp (win me) with his old comp (win 98). and i told him how to do it on his old comp (i'm in a networking class), and he said it was basically the same on win me.

You can network win2k and win98 without any problems... It doesn't matter what OS each PC is running as long as they have the same protocols...

There's a icon call "My Network Places" in win2k... and in it you can go into your LAN... just go into properties and u can configure everything almost the same way as win98...

BCYL, where do I find the "My Network Places" in Win2k? Is it a control panel, or on the desktop?

I have Win98se, NT4, and Win2K machines on a local peer-to-peer network without any problems.

aha! help 🙂 i have the same situation. We have 2 win95's 4 win98's 3 win98se's and 1 win2k pro all connected through a peer-to-peer. I upgraded the win2k system from windows ME and had no problems with it linking back into the network. It sees all the other computers and they can see it too. I can pull files from the network onto the Win2K computer, but any computer in the network that tries to use the Win2K's shared hard drives gets asked for a password. I never set a password for any resources on the puter, and the user login passwords don't work either. any ideas?

you must activate the guest userprofile,
windows by default switches this off,
you can find it in the user manager or something (i can't check it on my win98 machine)
don't forget to switch off expire and must change password option
if you share you folder and use the everyone profile for total access,
then it must work.

Well for this you just have to enable file and print sharing on all the computers and keep the workgroupname the same in all the computers. And you specify IP addresses only when you are using a router or something to connect to the internet. For peer to peer the ip's are not required. To specify IP's to connect through a router you have to install the TCP/IP protocol and then speficify a unique ip to all the comps.
