Win2K vs WinXP

hey, most of the computers at the office will be running sempron 2200s with 256mb DDR sometime next week and i wanted to put xpsp2 on all of them, a friend however suggested win2k instead because the rigs arent that great etc...

few questions:

as far as compatiblity goes if something runs fine on 2k it should run fine on xp right?

also, i personally dont use windows security centre but it would be useful for the office computers to stay clean and out of trouble because most users here arent that computer savvy... so the million dollar question is: is the added security of sp2 reason enough to switch from 2k? is 2k really that unsafe in comparison?
 
I would say the added security is worth it. And those pcs are plenty fast for Windows XP, but you may want to add another 256MB stick of ram to each of them.
 
Semprons will be fine with XP SP2. 2k not necessarily "unsafe" but if left unpatched then one is asking for trouble. By comparison, XPSp2 is way more secure, but even it has had security vulnerabilities.
 
unfortunately i don't think we have a budget to add 256mb of ram to all computers because there's 10-15 of them that would need the upgrade and since its not absolutely necessary... (2 of the semprons run fine now on sp2 with 256)... it would be nice tho 🙂
 
They should run fine on XP SP2, just strip them down to win2k GUI. I assume these machines aren't going to be running anything too demanding since the noted cpu and amount of memory.
 
If the PC's have no OS on currently, then I'd use XP w/SP2.

If however, the PC's already have 2K installed, then I wouldn't waste the money upgrading. Just keep them patched and use an alternate browser to IE.

they're all running win98 😱
hence i pretty much made my dad get those semprons that will arrive next week hopefully... theres 2 of them right now that run fine though on xpsp2

In that case go with XP w/SP2.
