Win2k Upgrade from Win98 -- Do I need full version?

I am upgrading my system at work to 1 gig T-Bird with all the bells and whistles and have decided it's time to move to Win2k, mostly for stability reasons -- I have two monitors and multiple windows open at all time, which often causes Win98SE to produce the dreaded BSOD.

My question: Do I need the full version to install on the new harddrive or can I install the upgrade version with a compliance check on my Win98SE disk? I've always assumed I needed the full version; however, I recently noted than you can do a straight upgrade from Win98 to Win2k, without wiping and installing fresh. Although I would never perform such a feat, it made me wonder whether the upgrade version of Win2k is all I need. In addition, and to add the confusion, I read a ZDnet article that mentioned two different upgrade versions of Win2k "NT Upgrade Version" and a slightly higher priced "Win9X Update Version."

What's the deal here?

PS I would have tried to look all this stuff up on microsoft's website, but it's been flaky for the past two days and is currently down.

You can't "upgrade from Win98" to Win2K, it's made of of totally differently "kernel".

WinME shares the same core/kernel as Win9x so you can "upgrade" your Win9x to WinME.

Win2K shares the same core/kernel as WinNT so you can "upgrade" your NT to Win2k. (WSK > Pro, Server > Advance Server)

Personally I don't recommend "upgrading" a previous installation of anything other than fresh install w/ a full version of the OS.

No, you do not need the full version if you have a copy of Windows 95, 98, ME, or NT on CD. Just save yourself the money and buy the upgrade, and install it on a freshly reformatted computer, I do it all the time. The Windows 2000 setup will ask for a previous version of Windows for verification. Then, just put in your Windows 98SE CD, and it will verify, then it will ask you to return the Windows 2000 CD to continue the installation. Really easy to do. The full version and the upgrade version are identical, only difference is one asks for previous version verification, the other doesn't.

is correct save your money and get an upgrade. Then Win200o installation is simple compared to a win98 install. Just pop in the cd, and if you read the wizard it will handle everything for you.

I`ve got a question. Just got Win2K Pro a few weeks back. I set it up first as a dual boot deal with 98Se with no problems. Decided to go all Win2k, so I formatted c: and popped in the 2k disk just like I`ve done many times with 98 upgrade disks. Typed setup and got an error saying that "this cannot be run in DOS mode". This is with an upgrade 2kPro disk. What`s the deal with that?

Bulldawg: The W2K CD is bootable, so that's the way to do setup. Go into your bios and set the boot device to the CDROM, then just start the computer and the setup will start automatically in its own environment without a DOS boot disk. You actually don't even have to have your drive partitioned or formatted to setup Windows 2000, it gives you the option to create partitions and format the drive in either NTFS or FAT32 during setup.

wow!!! that is easy. i didnt know win2k could do that. i guess microsoft is actually getting a bit better, but they will always have bugs in their software and make it customer-UNfriendly, but oh well. also, i had a question about shoutcast and since you all seem to know so much, can you check it out. It is in this category.

Thanks for the responses. I picked up the upgrade today and did a fresh install with the obligatory compliance check. I'm now up and running with Win2k. Install went very smoothly. So far so good.

I have just completed this action no longer than a month ago. I upgraded to the ME on top of 98. I used Partition Magic to bust up my hard drive.Useing 98 this was fine, ME however does not like this. I kept getting the scandisk on startup regardless how I shut down the computer. After installing and reformating the hard drive, and installing ME fresh, I have had no problems for the past four months....
