Win2K: The instruction at XXXXX acessed data at XXXXXX...

In Windows 2000 Professional I've been getting some errors that are new to me:

&quot;The instruction at location <some memory address> accessed data at <some memory address>, which cannot be read.&quot;

It seems to happen when I'm running Visual Interdev or Internet Explorer. I've been running those programs for quite a while without any problems.

Any ideas what it might be or how I could fix it?

A friend had a system which showed this error for Outlook Express and Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 on occasion. (She doesn't run Visual Interdev.) The problem was not fixed by SP1 for W2K, nor by SR1 for O2K. But it went away when SP2 for O2K was installed. (Yup, that's SP2, not SR2. I just love consistency in nomenclature.)

It wasn't a big problem since it would only close the affect application, but it was annoying the heck out of her. Hope you get a solution.

Which version of IE do you run?

I noticed these errors when I installed Visual Studio 6. I can't find the support article now, but it said something like: this happens when running visual studio and IE5, upgrade IE to 5.5. (i did have 5.5)
Uninstalling visual studio did not get rid of the errors (and I need to run it anyway, so i don't have a choice), but I did isolate the problem to that app. I did a clean install of 2k on another partition, installed most of my apps, and rean it for a few days without any errors. installed visual studio, and the errors started showing up immediately.

I know your not running visual studio, but interdev may have the same problem on some machines.

like jaywallen said, it's not a big problem, if you need to run interdev, you might have to live with it until a fix is released.
 
Actually I noticed that I was using some active desktop stuff -- I had pasted up a weathermap back when we had a big storm coming in.

I got rid of that, and I haven't gotten any errors today. I don't know if that was the problem, but I remember avoiding active desktop back in my Win98 days.

I'm glad you posted that information. I've not cared much for most Active Desktop features. I've avoided using it myself, but I get tempted once-in-a-while. I've wondered if it worked any better under W2K than it did under Win98SE. I guess the answer is, maybe not?
