I have Win2K Pro w/SP1 installed on a system with the following:
ASUS A7V (no on board sound) w/ AMD Thunderbird 900 mhz
Diamon MX300 PCI soundcard (Aureal Vortex 2)
256 Mbs PC133
10 gig Maxtor HD
GeForce video card
Netgear 10/100 NIC

When I first start up the OS the sound will work once then goes away and won't work again until I restart. For example if I start up Winamp and hit play it will play sound correctly but if I hit stop and then play again the sound is gone. Same thing with windows sounds. The first sound file (appearently of any type) I run will issue sound. Everything after that is silence. This is the strangest of problems. I am using the driver set for my sound card that comes with Win2k and there are no hardware conflicts that I can find anywhere. I use a swapable HD and when I swap out my Win2K HD for my Win98SE HD all sound works perfectly fine under Win98SE. Does anyone know what the issue is here?

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Underdeveloped Aureal drivers for win2k

Aureal went out of business before any real drivers making could be done for win2k, the only betas they had released were very limited.

They only seem to run with older via boards and intel motherboards in win2k.
the KX133 and KT133 chipsets do not do well with the beta win2k drivers.

There currently isnt much we can do because creative, who bought all of aureal's assests, isnt planning on making new drivers for the cards cause they want us to buy their marked-up monopoly cards

I figured about as much but it seems so strange that it works once per boot. I just discovered a similar problem under Win98SE as well. The sound always works but my joystick that is attached to my soundcard only works in one game session then it starts telling me that it is not connected under the control panel. I have to remove the gameport joystick in device manager and reinstall it on the next boot up. This whole situation really sucks. I liked my Aureal card too.
