Win2k -- slow with games?!?

Spooner

Lifer
When I had Win98se with 192mb of RAM, CivIII ran pretty fine. Seemed to run at normal speed.

Now that I have Win2k with 640mb of RAM, CivIII is running very choppy. When units move, it stalls between steps... when scrolling to view landscape, it takes forever to move the screen.

What the hell gives? I know win2k is supposed to be slower when running games, but this is ridiculous!!!

Any fixes?

(i posted this in the software forum as well, but wasn't sure if this could be a hardware issue, so threw it in here too)

try running it as a power user and see what happens. There are some games that just don't run very well as administrator.

I have the latest via 4in1 drivers. 4.35 i think.

Never heard of that being a solution to fix choppy games. But to setup a power user, go to Control Panel->Users and Passwords and setup a new user and assign it to be a power user. Log off Windows 2000 and log backon with the new user.

there was a post that said 21.xx or somehting xp detonator drivers for Nvidia video cards were choppy in civ3.. apparently this is a documented problem...

I feel so much better, thanks

The game is scrolling slower than I an accustomed to under Windows XP."

This error is due to an incompatibility between Civilization III and the newest NVidia Detonator video drivers. Reverting back to the
previous driver, using the Revert Driver function of Windows XP, should correct the issue. Please contact your video hardware
manufacturer if you need assistance with this process.
