Win2K service packs, and what about .Net?

Just built a fresh system based on the specs below. Installed Win2K Pro and all is up and running. When I do a Windows Update, it says i should install SP4, but upon some research, I see lots of folks have serious problems with it.

Any advice?

Also, should I install the .Net framework? What implications will it have for my system?

Thanks in advance!

I would definitely go for sp3. Do a system save, and try sp4.

Bear in mind that at least 90% won't have any prob. You only hear about the bad ones!!!!!

If there are probs, they are likely to be small.

You can make life easier for yourself by uninstalling any antivirus, just prior to installing an sp, and disabling firewall, and any other memory resident prog.

I have a fleet of about 80 Win2000 SP4 boxes to maintain at work, and they're extremely stable. My own home riggie ran fine with Win2000SP4 too. Many long, long Mechwarrior4 missions played until my eyes fell out, without any rude interruptions from BSODs. Free ZoneAlarm basic firewall is a good supplement to Win2k SP4 if you need a firewall solution for it.

I think if you look around, you can find people who've had "serious problems" with just about anything you can name, to be honest with you 😉

We have .net installed on most of our PCs at work if not all of them. I haven't had any issues with it. We have a couple of boxes with win2k server enterprise edition as well as win2k3 server enterprise. I believe those are running the .net framework as well. I know for sure our development machines are running it but they have win XP pro. All without any problems.

If your really worried about it, first install SP4 and then if that works, mark your pc to allow a rollback and then install .net on it. If it works, great!!! if not roll back.

Hope that helps.
